UW braces for big cuts - Madelyn Fairbanks, Seattle Post Intelligencer
University of Washington president Mark Emmert is getting ready for a significant cut to higher education state-funding, with a best case scenario which would cut enrollment at UW by as many 600 undergraduate and 250 graduate students. The UW also proposed a worst-case scenario based on 50 percent more cuts to higher education than those proposed by the governor. This would cut enrollment by as many as 1,600 undergraduate and 670 graduate students. "Turning students away from the university who we know are qualified to be students here, that's extremely difficult," Emmert said. The UW expects to see a 2 to 6 percent decrease in enrollment, hundreds of jobs lost and time added to degree completion. The cuts come as a result of a 14 percent reduction in state funding to higher education and a 7 percent tuition increase in the next year under the governor's proposal. Washington State University will experience a 12 percent reduction in state funds.
