UCSC experiences high drop-off in acceptance of admission offers - J.M. BROWN, Mercury News

UC Santa Cruz saw the sharpest decline among all nine UC undergraduate campuses in the number of prospective freshmen who have expressed an intent to register for fall classes compared to how many were admitted, according to a report released Tuesday. While at first blush that may seem alarming, UCSC spokesman Jim Burns said the 2.3 percent drop-off in acceptance of admission offers -- from 22.8 percent to 20.5 percent -- is actually a good thing. He said it shows that campus planning to limit enrollment paid off following a year in which the nearly 3,900-strong freshman class had exceeded early estimates by approximately 500.
