UMaine System Trustees Mull Advice on Restructuring - Anne Ravana, Maine Public Broacasting Network
How should the University of Maine System find the savings to offset a projected $43 million shortfall over the next four years? It depends who you ask. The System's Board of Trustees today received three reports full of recommendations, from consolidating services to reconsidering unpopular degrees and courses. The independence of the University System's seven campuses has encouraged competition. That might be considered a good thing, but a task force of 12 community representatives says those forces have also led to a proliferation of majors and programs, a loss of focus at the campus level, and a reduction in quality.
