Students at Oakland University are feeling upset and powerless to do anything about a hefty proposed tuition hike of 11 percent in the fall. The increase means freshmen will have to come up with an extra $885 -- the largest tuition hike among the state's 15 public universities. Sophomore Kristin Dayag, student body president, is working two jobs to pay tuition, and cannot fathom taking on even more responsibilities. "My dad has been laid off from work for over a year," said Dayag, 19, of Canton. "This summer, I'm trying to finish my general education requirements, and there's no way of paying for it."
