The University of Maryland’s flagship College Park campus is freezing its hiring and eyeing “other separations” to cut $14.5 million in the face of a state budget shortfall. UMCP President C.D. Mote outlined the budget cuts in a letter posted on the university’s Web site. Earlier this month, the Maryland Board of Public Works slashed $280 million from the state budget because of declining tax revenue. The cuts include $40 million to the University System of Maryland. College Park is the largest of the USM institutions, with 3,000 faculty members and $426 million in state funding.
