University of Illinois announces furlough plan, hiring freeze due to state budget woes - Associated Press

A professor says furloughs he and other University of Illinois face could hurt the school in the long run. Professor David Bullock says he understands the plan to furlough faculty and staff for four days is needed. State government owes the university $436 million as Illinois wrestles with its own growing financial mess. But Bullock says pay cuts and other austerity measures will drive away good professors and make potential job candidates look elsewhere. Bullock says the furlough will cost him roughly $1,500.
