Budget Cuts at CSU and UC Keep Students Out of Classes - Heather Zimar, the Transcript

After lawmakers cut the University of California and California State University budgets by 20 percent last year, student fees increased and course offerings decreased, reports The Sacramento Bee. Fees are up 32 percent compared to last year, to nearly $5,000 a year at CSU and $11,000 at UC. In the fall, CSU campuses cut class sections by 7 percent statewide compared with the previous year, and cut lecturer employment by 17 percent. Student enrollment, meanwhile, dropped just 1 percent during the same period. Preliminary data show that course sections this spring, compared to last, are down about 3 percent at San Francisco State, 7 percent at San Jose State, and 21 percent at Chico State, the Bee reported.
