Pain just beginning, U of A says - Elise Stolte, edmontonjournal.com
University of Alberta students celebrated a partial victory Friday as administrators cut their mandatory fee increase almost in half, but the board of governors warned of looming layoffs because of a $14-million deficit. The board approved a $290 mandatory, non-instructional fee for full-time students next year. That's down from the $550 fee students protested last week at the legislature. The fee will go to maintaining existing student services. "It's better. It's still not great, but it's better," said Zach Fentiman, president of the Students' Union outside a meeting where the board of governors also passed the 2010-11 budget. He urged the board to make the fee a "temporary measure to get us through."
