Tuition is relief for college budgets - Peter Wong, Statesman Journal

Extra tuition income generated by more students will enable state universities to hire more staffers and offset most of the $27 million in cuts from an across-the-board reduction ordered by Gov. Ted Kulongoski in tax-supported spending. Legislators approved the $64.8 million plan Tuesday, but one legislative leader said afterward that state universities are in a one-of-a-kind situation among agencies. Enrollments at state universities are setting records, but so are requests for food assistance and welfare payments.
