Thinking of heading to college soon? Consider this: as enrollment at Southeast Texas colleges and universities breaks records, campus leaders look for ways to save some cash -- and raising tuition rates could be the answer to offsetting the severe budget cuts many campuses face.
Freezing job openings, reducing equipment purchases and even reducing the number of classes offered are a few of the changes the Lamar campuses have made in their effort to drop their budgets. Earlier this year, the Legislative Budget Board and Gov. Rick Perry ordered agencies and universities to propose cuts totaling 10 percent of their state funding for the two-year budget cycle that will begin in September 2011.
