UNT implements hiring freeze to prepare for state budget cuts - CANDACE CARLISLE, Denton Record-Chronicle
University of North Texas officials have implemented a hiring freeze following a directive by state officials that public universities prepare for 10 percent cuts in state funding in the next two-year budget. The budget-cut proposals ordered last month by Gov. Rick Perry and the Legislative Budget Board for the state's universities, along with other state agencies, could take effect in September 2011. The hiring freeze will be modified to take into account the university's strategic research goals, said Jean Bush, acting senior associate vice president of finance. Critical hires could still be made with approval of either a dean or vice president, she said.
