The University of Alaska Fairbanks plans to eliminate more than a dozen jobs to save $6.2 million and balance the campus budget. The plan released Monday includes at least four layoffs, with the elimination of about 10 more positions that are vacant and won't be filled. Other moves include cuts in temporary employees, student workers and interns. Some departments plan to shift full-time employees to part-time status or delay the hiring process for vacant positions. University officials said the cuts are needed to balance a budget strained by rising personnel costs and increases in areas including fuel, leases, library materials and travel.
