Senators block plan to raise college tuition - Mike Hasten, the Advertiser

State senators Wednesday blocked a move that would have pumped $37.4 million in new tuition revenue into the budgets of state colleges and universities to offset cuts. The money from tuition increases is included in the proposed budget that goes into effect July 1. Gov. Bobby Jindal was counting on the increase being approved as part of his pledge to fully fund higher education. House members on the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget approved the tuition increase but Senate members split 4-4, killing the proposal since both houses have to approve any additions to budgets.
