Unions react to U Toledo layoffs and tuition hike - Desmond Strooh, WTOL

The University of Toledo board of trustees is reviewing an $800 million budget, which includes major cuts. State funding for the university has dropped by $20 million. Budget cuts have affected about 100 non-faculty staff positions. Carol Shlievert is one of dozens of University of Toledo staff members facing layoffs. The administrative assistant worked at UT for 27 years, but her last day is Friday. "It's been very stressful. We have a child still at home. We're worried about our house and car payments and meeting our bills," Shlievert said. Shlievert spoke alongside union representatives at a press conference in which they lamented the actions of university administrators. They called for an independent audit of UT's finances and more transparency from the university's administration.
