A report to the Board of Regents outlines how South Dakota's public universities have trimmed $8.5 million in the budget year starting in July. A 10 percent cut in state spending approved by the Legislature hit the regents' system to the tune of $17.5 million. A 6.9 percent increase in tuition will make up just over half of the lost funding, or $9 million. The largest budget cuts are at the biggest schools. South Dakota State is cutting $1.8 million from its budget. The University of South Dakota is cutting $1.2 million.
