Editorial: Sizable TBR tuition hikes unfortunate for students - Daily News Journal

Cuts in the state budget and plans to convert some temporary jobs into tenure-track positions could leave Middle Tennessee State University students struggling to pay nearly 10 percent in increased tuition. On Monday, the staff at the Tennessee Board of Regents recommended MTSU's tuition and fees rise by 9.8 percent. The "guiding principles" behind recommending the increase include "adoption of hourly rates sufficient to replace 80 percent of lost state funding" and other issues, including an increased "salary pool." The timing on this proposed tuition hike couldn't be worse in this current economy. An increase in tuition could take higher education just out of the reach of a few students or saddle others with long-term debt.
