Pell grants: Future investments should be protected - Florida Times-Union Editorial

In its drive to rein in spending, it is eyeing further cuts to Pell Grants. It seems like Congress may be taking yet another ax to the future. This program makes it possible for nearly 10 million of the nation's students to attend college. That's heartless — especially when one considers that Pell Grant recipients are from families with incomes of $30,000 or less.During budget negotiations earlier this year, Congress dropped the summer Pell Grant program. But in a proposal put forth by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Ill, around 1.7 million struggling students would no longer qualify for the grants, and the maximum award of $5,550 could be cut by as much as 45 percent.
