Clatsop College to lay off 15 faculty members - EDWARD STRATTON, The Daily Astorian

Fifteen of Clatsop Community College's 39 full-time faculty will receive layoff notices Wednesday. They are effective spring term. Administrators made the announcement at a meeting with faculty Tuesday night. Leaders will also offer adjunct work and early retirement packages to those who are eligible. An undetermined number of classified employees and one high-level administrator will also be given notices Thursday. "The most important criteria is what is in the best interests of our students," said Larry Galizio, president of the college. "Our college has to be fiscally sustainable."
The contract that faculty members negotiated with the college stipulates that they must be notified at least 90 days in advance of a layoff. Galizio said that means layoffs won't take effect until spring term, saving the college about $311,000 this fiscal year. That leaves about one-third of the approximately $1 million budget gap the college had to fill this year.
