Student pursues associate degree at Muskegon Community College to avoid debt trap - Brian McVicar, Muskegon Chronicle

Hindsley, 20, said he decided against getting a bachelor's degree because he feared racking up thousands of dollars in student loan debt, and he was unsure what his career options would be after graduating. Next month, he'll graduate debt free, with credentials he said he hopes will lead to a good paying job. “It's a thing in my family — don't do the whole debt thing if you don't have to,” he said. Hindsley's path mirrors what some state legislators say higher education should strive to be — more vocational. State Rep. Bob Genetski, a Saugatuck Republican, has said universities should strive to prepare students for where the jobs of the future will be.
