Another View: The real problem at CSU? Drastic budget cuts - Sacramento Bee

Peter Mehas, Carol Chandler and Bill Hauck, members of the California State University board of trustees, are responding to the Dec. 4 editorial "CSU needs to focus on what drives angry dissent." The editorial stated that the trustees are "avoiding the real issue: As long as they keep giving big raises to top administrators while jacking up tuition, angry protestors are going to show up." As members of the California State University board of trustees, we are faced with making many challenging and difficult decisions on behalf of the institution and citizens of California. But nothing has compared with trying to maintain access to our campuses in light of massive and devastating budget cuts. This year alone, CSU's state funding was cut by $650 million, and we are facing an additional $100 million reduction. That is a 28 percent cut in state support in one year
