About 15 support-staff jobs will be cut early next year to help the faculty of arts at the University of Alberta save $1.5 million, says the faculty’s dean. “We have already given the money to the (university’s) central administration and therefore we are living on a deficit until we sort this out,” Lesley Cormack said Thursday. “We will certainly continue to look for other places we can cut back, and there are a few, but in fact 15 support staff will not equal $1.5 million, and so what we need is the support staff plus other savings.” Faculty support staff do wide-ranging work, including organizing course timetables, entering marks, processing travel claims, advising students and helping them with registration and making sure people get paid, Cormack said.
