Kentucky university heads foresee tough choices, higher tuition - Courier Journal

University presidents cautioned Thursday that another round of state budget cuts will lead to more strains on campus — including tuition increases — as colleges grapple with aging infrastructure and growing enrollment. The House budget subcommittee on postsecondary education heard reports from University of Louisville President James Ramsey and University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto as lawmakers begin the budget-writing process for the next biennium. Gov. Steve Beshear’s proposed budget includes a 6.4 percent cut to higher education, reducing U of L’s budget by $9 million and UK’s by $19.4 million in the first year of the next biennium. He is not proposing cuts in the second year.
