UNI presents reality of Iowa's universities - Des Moines Register Editorial
Last week all Iowans, including elected officials who make budget decisions, saw the reality of the state’s policy at the University of Northern Iowa. The images included students camped out on campus awaiting news of whether their major field of study would be eliminated. Faculty members wondered whether they would get a buy-out offer or a pink slip. A venerable on-campus laboratory school that gives education majors first-hand classroom experience is slated to be shuttered. The administration released a set of recommendations Thursday, in which nearly a fourth of its academic degrees would be eliminated or restructured. There would be no more degree programs in French, German, Russian, geology and geography. Several master’s degree programs would no longer be offered. Other programs would be restructured.
