House suggests $11.6 mil. in budget cuts - JORDAN RUSSELL, Towerlight

In a report by the House Appropriations Committee to the Maryland House of Delegates, the House suggested that the University System of Maryland’s budget should be reduced by $11.6 million. Emmanuel Welsh, chair of the University System of Maryland Student Council, said that the Senate originally suggested that $5.3 million be made in cuts to the USM budget. The House then followed up with an increase to the original proposal. “In years past, the budget cuts to USM are not usually this high,” Welsh said “The Senate and the House have both passed their budget bills, so a conference committee will soon be formed to iron out the differences between the two budget bills.” Welsh said that if the suggested cuts take place, it could pose problems for higher education institutions in the area.
