Michigan higher education funding tied to social issues - Matthew Miller, Lansing State Journal

The state House recommendation would allocate the $36 million, along with 1 percent of the money universities are getting now, on the basis of number of undergraduate degrees awarded, giving double weight to degrees in critical fields. It would tie eligibility for new funding to stem cell reporting, a requirement that universities not compel in-state undergraduates to carry health insurance. The budget recommendation for the state’s public universities approved last week by the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Higher Education includes a section that says those universities “shall not collaborate in any manner with a nonprofit worker center whose documented activities include coercion through protest, demonstration, or organization against a Michigan business.”
