The University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences plans to lay off staff, freeze most faculty hiring and reduce admissions to selected doctoral programs as part of a proposal to make about $5.9 million in budget cuts. Dean Paul D'Anieri released the plan Monday in a letter to college faculty and staff. He said the impact of layoffs and cuts will be minimized, but that's a difficult task after years of state cuts. "At this point, all of these cuts are going to have a big impact on something," he said. UF is cutting $38.2 million across the university in response to reduced state funding in the budget signed into law last month and taking effect in the next fiscal year. UF is distributing cuts to colleges through its budgeting system that is based on college revenue and expenses.
