Students will face higher tuition rates next year as a result of the Board of Regents approving a 3 percent increase for in-state students and 5 percent for out-of-state students yesterday — an increase far less than the double-digit hikes many were fearing over the last several weeks. However, with the revenue measures in effect, the board was able to successfully cap the tuition increases at the lower rate. The special session addressed the revenue side of the state budget by shifting the state income tax bracket to raise about $250 million to offset some of the larger reductions. System Chancellor Brit Kirwan said the restoration of funds displayed the state’s commitment to academics. He said he expects the university to absorb about $2.5 million of the $5.3 million in cuts.
