South Carolina State University employees will start going to work only four days a week as the institution tries to find ways to save money. Employees won’t lose any hours, but the institution hopes to save money by cutting overhead and utility costs, the university says. The university isn’t sure how much will be saved, but, “We know other universities have done this and realized cost savings,” said Erica S. Taylor, director of University Relations and Marketing. In a statement released on its website, the university says it also hopes the shorter week increases employee morale, helps them save money on gas and allows them to spend time with their families. The new work week will begin June 4 and last until July 27, with the workday beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 6:30 p.m. Employees will leave at 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Classes won’t be affected since summer school isn’t held on Fridays, and events scheduled for the three-day weekends will continue.
