San Bernardino Valley College students felt they won a victory Thursday night after they addressed the college district's board about a budget cut they say puts students on their own to find scholarships. "We won the battle, not the war, but the battle," said Hugo Guzman, a 20-year-old Valley College student who lives in Colton. The heart of the issue is a job switch that moves Mary Valdemar, a secretary who has for many years helped students find scholarships into another role, leaving students nowhere to go for help. This is of particular concern because so many Valley College students come from financially distressed families and are the first in their family to attend college, Valdemar told the San Bernardino Community College District board of trustees.
