UVI makes broad cuts to spending to balance $44.9 million budget - Daily News

The University of the Virgin Islands board approved a $44.9 million budget for Fiscal Year 2013 as well as a new strategic plan and a new solar energy project. The board met Saturday on St. Croix for its quarterly meeting. The board approved a FY 2013 operating budget of $44,939,888, which is several million dollars less than the current operating budget. UVI anticipates $22.9 million in V.I. government contributions for FY 2013, which is about $3.5 million less than the previous year. UVI balanced its FY 2013 budget by reducing the operating budget of each university office, component and school or college; eliminating vacant faculty and staff positions; reducing travel expenses; and reducing food expenses. "We are beyond the cutting of fat. We are getting to the bone," UVI President David Hall said at the meeting. "We are doing the best we can to absorb that reduction.
