Nicholls State University administrators are laying off employees but say they haven't finished deciding how many and what departments will see cuts. “University administrators are in the process of making painful but necessary cuts to personnel and services,” school President Stephen Hulbert said in an emailed statement. “This is a very challenging and frustrating time for our campus.” Administrators said they're trying to fill a budget gap of $5.3 million. Although tuition and fees are set to increase by $1,000 per student, they say that money will be eaten up by a $4.4 million cut in general state money and by increasing costs the state has forced the school to pay for things such as health insurance and retirement.
