Federal budget cuts could put research at risk: Ohio colleges could lose millions — Encarnacion Pyle, The Columbus Dispatch

Glenn Arnett, 21, a junior, is working to complete a carbon-fiber car — the kind of innovation funded by federal grants, which face a $110 billion cut if Congress fails to act. Ohio State leaders like to say that the university is poised to change the world with its scientific discoveries, whether it is conquering diseases, coming up with more fuel-efficient cars or studying the far reaches of the universe. But research likely will be threatened if President Barack Obama and Congress don’t reverse or reduce mandatory budget cuts set to start in January, they say. “We’re potentially looking at millions of dollars in reductions, which is very scary,” said Caroline Whitacre, OSU’s vice president for research.
