State universities in Alabama increased tuition prices by an average of 6.3 percent for the upcoming school year. But the climb in in-state undergraduate tuition and fee prices at four-year Alabama public universities since 2000 has been a staggering average of 172.4 percent and at the state’s two largest schools, the University of Alabama and Auburn University, the increase has been much more than that. Alabama’s tuition has increased from $3,014 per year in 2000 for in-state, undergraduate, full-time students to $9,200 in 2012, 205.2 percent in 12 years while tuition at Auburn increased 199.4 percent in the same period, from $3,154 to $9,446.
