Citing cuts in both state and federal funding, the University of Texas Medical Branch said it would lay off 51 people, including researchers, doctors and staff, as it works to stay in the black. There are two sets of layoffs. The medical branch this month informed 23 faculty members, of whom 90 percent are researchers, their contracts would not be renewed because of reductions in National Institutes of Health grants. In the second set, the medical branch laid off 28 staff members, including administrative support and financial analysts, as it seeks to trim costs in light of state funding cuts.
