In Sept. 2011 the Guilford Beacon reported a robust sustainability program in an article titled “Staffing Changes Strengthen College’s Sustainability Program.” No one could ever guess that 12 months later the college would notify those in both building and grounds, and sustainability by email that their jobs had been cut. In July, while most students were away on break, administrators implemented their “worse” case plan, laying off staff positions campus-wide. All in all, 16 faculty and staff positions were on the chopping block; though some of the staff positions targeted for elimination were already vacant, administrators say.
