Enrollment drops steeply at FAMU - Doug Blackburn, Democrat

Administrators at Florida A&M University are bracing for a steeper decline in enrollment than previously predicted. The university had anticipated a drop of about 500 students from last year’s 13,300 record enrollment, due primarily to tougher admission standards and a decision to accept fewer students who failed to meet state standards. But the unofficial total for the 2012 fall semester — which is expected to be finalized later this week — shows enrollment down almost 800 students. There are financial consequences for the university if it is down about 300 more students than anticipated, because tuition dollars are FAMU’s No. 1 funding source. Three hundred students represent more than $1 million in the university’s operating budget.
