State university system officials plan to appeal to the Legislature to restore a 49 percent cut in state aid in exchange for a two-year tuition freeze and a pledge to work more efficiently. Cuts enacted by the Legislature in the last budget cycle slashed the approximately $100 million in annual aid in half. The action is expected to unfold starting in less than two weeks, first when trustees convene Sept. 11 and then continuing in budget discussions with the Legislature this fall. The people have their backs. A new poll by the University of New Hampshire shows 64 percent of respondents disagree with the Legislature and 71 percent favor a restoration of aid in exchange for a freeze on in-state tuition.
