When James Lake came to LSU-Shreveport in 1973 to teach Shakespeare, he never looked back. After just under 40 years at the university, the renowned professor decided it was time for him to step away from LSUS and focus on other endeavors. Until, that is, Lake realized his beloved Shakespeare class would be in jeopardy. With budgets continuing to tighten, Lake knew the English department would be unable to replace his position. So Lake offered to stay on at LSUS to continue teaching Shakespeare for free for the last three years. “The department head said the university would be unable to pay me, which is regrettable,” Lake said.
