Facing budget gap, Morehouse furloughs staff - CBS ATLANTA
Morehouse, one of the most respected historically black colleges, said it must furlough all staff and faculty for five days this academic year. Enrollment dropped by about 125 students, because fewer students can get loans because of stricter federal standards. "It's definitely tough paying for an education when you're student and you're only making so much," Thomas said. Morehouse faces a budget gap of more than $3 million. Robert Franklin, the college's president, said that even he will be forced to take those furlough days. "Furloughing faculty and staff is a last resort measure," Franklin said, adding the budget cuts will help save money "in the mid six figures."
