Hocking students turn out to protest job layoffs - David DeWitt, Athens News
A group of 30 to 40 Hocking College students held signs and changed outside of the administrative offices of the school Monday morning, protesting announced layoffs in Hocking's criminal justice program. Those layoffs were just part of a major administrative restructuring at the college, which laid off several deans and consolidated their positions. Last week, the Hocking College Board of Trustees approved a variety of budget changes including a reduction in force of 23 positions at the school. The layoffs and budget changes are meant to deal with a $4.3 million shortfall due to enrollment declines. Figures from Hocking College's Department of Institutional Research show that the college is down 1,327 students from fall 2011. Officials have attributed most of that decline to the switch from quarters to semesters.
