Hocking’s problems stem from big drop in enrollment - David DeWitt, Athens News
This has been a season of change for Hocking College as a sharp enrollment decline this fall led to 23 layoffs and a substantial administrative and academic reorganization. The layoffs, reduction and consolidation of dean positions and a variety of budget changes are meant to deal with a $4.3 million shortfall that college officials blame on the enrollment drop. Figures from Hocking College's Department of Institutional Research show that the college is down 1,327 students from fall 2011. The drop from 5,908 to 4,581 students represents a decline of 22.46 percent. In 2010 the enrollment was 6,599. Officials have attributed most of that decline to the switch from quarters to semesters. The reorganizing efforts at the college are nearing completion, Carl Bridges, provost and vice president of academic and student affairs at Hocking, said Friday.
