Gregoire on budget: More revenue or deeper recession - Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Gov. Chris Gregoire is what politicians call a “lame duck” with less than a month to serve, but she is not ducking a fight over the state’s need for new revenue to pay for its cash-strapped public schools and public colleges and universities. With an increase in wholesale gas and diesel taxes, and extending a beer tax increase and an .03 percent surcharge on service businesses, Gregoire has come up with a $1 billion down payment toward meeting the State Supreme Court’s mandate for increased basic education funding. As Jason Mercier of the conservative Washington Policy Center noted with obvious delight, the Gregoire budget faces a tenuous life if it is not dead on arrival. http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/2012/12/18/gregoire-on-budget-more-revenue-or-deeper-recession/
