U Montana will use reserves to ease most budget cuts - Dennis Bragg - KPAX News
University of Montana administrators will use reserves to make up most of a budget cut of more than $5 million, making up revenue lost because of declining enrollments. UM administrators have had spreadsheets out since last fall, when it became apparent enrollment was not only going to be lower than an already projected drop, but more than 700 students behind a year ago. Colleges, like any business, depend on customers. And without those students, UM President Royce Engstrom has had to order cuts to make up the $5.7 million deficit. Over $3 million of the gap will be filled using reserves and contingency funds. The remainder from cuts of less than 2 percent across campus, with Engstrom saying savings shouldn't impact the student's academic experience.
