With university budget cuts, government bites the hand that feeds it - SARKIS METERISSIAN, Montreal Gazette
Recently the Quebec government announced $140 million in budget cuts for Quebec universities. For McGill University, the decrease may be in the range of $17 million to $21 million. Other provinces are also making cuts in university budgets. Nova Scotia, for example, cut university funding early this year. But the cut was only 3 per cent, and the government allowed for an increase in tuition fees. The average tuition in Nova Scotia is $5,731 — more than twice the price in Quebec. Nevertheless, all groups in the province rose to protest: professors, student groups and opposition politicians. The quality of their education will inevitably decline. Good professors will leave. Class sizes will increase. Many courses will be unavailable. And entire degree programs will be jeopardized.
