Community college budgets should be increased, not cut - Longview News-Journal Editorial
Despite what appears to be a slight surplus in the next state budget, nearly every group that receives state funding is going to get less than it wants. Unfortunately, that includes Texas community colleges, which are in line to receive about 6 percent less than the current budget provides. We believe those cuts would be a mistake. Our community colleges have a strong case for receiving more and hope our lawmakers see that. Unfortunately, even as demand has been increasing for the education they offer, community colleges and technical schools have been forced by budget restraints to close programs, cut classes and lay off staff. That has led to higher costs for students and declining enrollment.
That’s a bad trend. And it’s one that makes little sense.
