U of Saskatchewan gets rid of sheep amid budget cuts - Lasia Kretzel, NewsTalk 650
The University of Saskatchewan’s attempts to shear its budget have left agriculture students feeling fleeced. The university decided to sell its on-campus flock of about 300 ewes following a call to all departments to reign in spending and streamline programs over the next three years. Facing a potential $44.5 million deficit, sheep maintenance just wasn’t in the budget. “Three hundred ewes on campus is expensive in terms of the feed and the veterinary costs and the people to manage them,” said Mary Buhr, dean of the College of Agriculture and Bio-resources. “We just have to evaluate, are we doing things in the most efficient way possible and what’s the core mission and what’s critical for us.”
