Wanted: More college freshman - South Maryland News
Just as St. Mary’s College of Maryland secured additional state funding to halt the escalating cost of tuition at the public liberal arts school there’s this — there are not enough freshmen coming for the fall semester. The freshman class is still about 120 students short of the 470 expected on campus, and that’s if everyone who paid a deposit shows up. That translates into $3.5 million less than the college was expecting to collect. And that’s about 5 percent of the college’s budget, which means jobs will go unfilled and there may be layoffs. It’s possible that with a late enrollment push now underway some of these slots will be filled. But high school seniors are about to graduate, and most of their fall college plans are locked in.
