Who should decide how much college tuition costs? - Xerxes Wilson, Houma Today
The Legislature is again being asked to release its grip on tuition rates at the state’s colleges and universities. Two bills awaiting debate in the House this week would exempt higher education from constitutional rules requiring two-thirds approval from both the House and Senate before colleges can raise tuition. House Bill 194 by Rep. Walt Leger III, D-New Orleans, would give education management boards authority to raise tuition to the average of their peers across the South. The bill would also do away with the standard 12-credit-hour tuition cap to allow schools to bill students for classes they take above that mark.
