Indiana's university leaders not committed to debt crisis - Eric Bradner, Courier Press
Though there are signs of progress, Indiana’s university leaders demonstrated again that they are still not fully committed to grappling with America’s student debt crisis. The news trickled out last week. Indiana University trustees approved a 1.75 percent tuition hike. At Ball State University, the tuition bump is 2 percent. Ivy Tech is increasing its tuition by 8 percent. The University of Southern Indiana, meanwhile, announced a plan to increase tuition rates by $551 over the next two years. As they approved the higher tuition rates, these universities actually praised themselves for keeping the increases smaller than they usually are. Despite that sign that they’re getting more self-conscious about it, the trend in Indiana this year is for universities, yet again, to increase the amount they charge their students, as state budget-writers and policymakers stand by.
