Tuition increases expected as Kansas universities brace for cuts - MARÁ ROSE WILLIAMS, The Kansas City Star
State cuts to college and university budgets could mean that students in Kansas will end up paying a lot more for their higher education. Kansas universities this week are assessing how they will absorb a cut of nearly 5 percent over two years to their campus operation budgets. But school officials and members of the state Board of Regents said they will wait until after expected increases to tuition and fees are discussed Thursday before getting into details on how they will handle the cuts. Over the weekend, Kansas lawmakers voted to chop $35 million from the state’s higher-education operating budget for fiscal years 2014 and 2015, including a 3 percent overall cut and a $17.7 million chunk out of salaries and pay boosts for longevity.
